- I attended the Consumer Online Services Conference & Exhibition
- here in NYC today. I slithered into the back of AT&T' press conference
- this morning at the NY Sheritan Towers. Here is the deal. $19.95/
- month for unlimited access. They provide a version of Netscape optimiezed
- for the "WorldNet", but any browser will do. Current limit is 28.8bps.
- no ISDN or other connections. ALSO: If you allready have AT&T Long
- distance carrier, they give you an introductory offer of 5hrs. free
- per month, and $2.50/hr. over that for a year. I picked up one of
- there nice little press kits on the way out, and it had a nice classy
- purple insert in the front of the nice plastic packet that said in
- big letters "AT&T Internet for everyone". They are takeing sign ups
- now but wont be on line to the public until 3/14/96. There is no
- subscription fee. AT&T Chairman Robert E. Allen said "The company
- that brought everyone the phone now will bring the Internet to everyone.
- We believe the Internet will make communities more cohesive and
- businesses more competitive when it extends beyond the small percentage
- of people who use it today". Tom Evslin, vice president of AT&T WorldNet
- Service said,"Now every one of our consumer and business long distance
- customers has an easy way to try the Internet. AT&T WorldNet Service is
- the way you'd expect it from AT&T -- safe, fun and easy to use. We're
- so convinced that this is what our consumer customers have been
- waiting for that we're happy to have them try it free for a year."
- Initialy, there will be 200 POPs (points of presence) nationwide
- (why can't they just say "Nodes"?). They will shunt your dial in to
- any node that is under utilized should they experiance congestion at
- any one node. So, as the sales rep told me, you shouldn't have those
- slow downs in service at peak demand times that you sometimes get
- with local ISPs. They will also have an 800 # with friendly AT&T
- assistance on the other end to help you with any problems (wait till
- I call them for help configuring AmiTCP-4.0 & Mosaic 2.0 for my
- OMEGA 4000 computer (lets see: how many seconds are they allowed to
- be on any one call?).
